Why finish or remodel your basement? Well, for starters, you’ll have more space for living or storage. Also, if you’re planning to sell your home, you’ll be increasing its value! There are a few things you should know if you’re thinking of remodeling your basement:
Make sure it’s dry
Water issues can derail a basement remodeling project. Even if you don’t see the obvious signs, like pools of water or drips coming through the walls, you might still have water problems. Make sure the ground is graded away from your foundation, and check for any cracks in your foundation walls that need to be repaired.
You need a permit, even if you don’t think you do
Often, homeowners are tempted to skip the time-consuming and costly permitting process – and the tax increase that goes along with it. But beware: if you’re caught, the building department can force you to tear apart the project, and you’ll wind up losing even more time and money. The few hundred dollars the permit costs are well worth it, especially since it’ll give you an added level of expert oversight.
Know your building code
Many codes require 7 or 7.5 feet of clearance for living space. This might mean you need to dig out and lower the concrete floor, or if that’s too expensive, talk to your contractor about moving ducts or pipes.
