Picture this: It’s Sunday morning, and you’ve just stepped outside to water your plants. Now, your yard seemed perfectly fine on Saturday, but this morning, the first thing you notice is your neighbor’s yard. He’s added brand new planters, redone his stone path and added a fountain!? Green with envy, you rush off to your local home improvement store to outdo him. Your yard is going to have no fewer than three fountains!
Sound familiar? You’re not alone.
A recent survey by The Home Depot found that over half of Americans felt the need to begin home improvement projects of their own if they noticed their neighbors were doing it, too.
Millennials are particularly competition-prone. A whopping 70% reported feeling home improvement peer pressure, and half responded to it by undertaking a home improvement project that was specifically intended to steal their neighbors’ thunder. Millennials are also more likely to invest in purchases like new furniture or home décor. Interestingly, parents are more likely than those without children to catch the home improvement competition bug.
The study also found that most projects undertaken in the spirit of competition were related to curb appeal, like a new paint job or a refurbished front porch.
