Are you thinking about putting an addition onto your existing home so that one or both of your aging parents can move in with you? This is a great idea, as it will allow you to customize the addition to fit their needs. Take a look at a few of the things you should include in your home addition to make it perfect.
Give them all of the essentials in the home addition
When your aging parents move into their new addition, they should be provided with everything they’ll need to be comfortable. Additionally, you are going to want to give them their own space to live and relax, which will benefit all of you. That means installing a separate bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom for them. If possible, you should also install a private entrance so they can come and go without disturbing you and your family.
Limit the number of stairs needed to get into and out of the home addition space
Even if your aging parents aren’t having trouble with stairs now, there is a chance they will struggle with them eventually. It’s a good idea to avoid stairs altogether both inside and outside of your addition space. If you absolutely must have stairs, limit them to just one or two and have a plan in place in case those stairs ever become too much to handle.
Consider any changes your parents could experience in the future when planning the home addition
What happens if one of your parents needs to start using a wheelchair? Will your addition have enough space for it? Or what happens if your parent can no longer get into the shower? Did you think to have a tub for seniors installed? While your aging parents might be able to get around now, there’s no guarantee they’ll be able to do it later. Consider any challenges you might face moving forward when building your addition.
