As much as we may wish it, kitchen cabinets are not always timeless. Styles change, wood degrades, and eventually those cabinets just don’t look as good as they did when they were first installed. While you know a change is needed, it can be difficult to determine if you can restore your cabinets or if you have to replace them entirely. Here are some quick ways to figure out if you need to completely replace your kitchen cabinets.
Water damage
Once water gets into your wood, there’s not much you can do to get it out. Sometimes water damage can be fixed, but in most cases the damage is too serious or widespread. Signs of water damage can include the following:
- – Bubbling
- – Warping
- – Delamination
- – Discoloration
- – Mold
Mold
Speaking of mold, this is perhaps the biggest sign that you need to replace your cabinet. Mold can grow as a result of water damage or humid environments. Not only can it compromise the structural integrity of your cabinets, but mold can also impact your family’s health.
Soft cabinets
If you push against the side walls of your cabinets and notice that they feel soft, then this is another sign that you need to replace them. Soft cabinets often indicate poor structural integrity that ordinary repairs won’t be able to fix.
Poor functionality
Your cabinets can be as beautiful as can be, but they need to work properly in order for you to get the most use out of them. Some functionality issues can be repaired (i.e. squeaky doors), but others cannot. If, for instance, your cabinets are too high for you to reach, then it’s best to replace them instead of dragging out the step stool every time you need a glass.
